From loom salesman to global player

As early as the end of the 19th century, Sakichi Toyoda, father of company founder Kiichiro Toyoda, began developing automated looms, which his son later joined. As automobile manufacturing becomes increasingly important after the turn of the century, Toyoda decides to sell his patent rights. The proceeds are used to create the Toyota Motor Corporation - the foundation stone for today's multinational company is laid.

While the Asian automobile industry was still underestimated by its American and European competitors until the 1960s, the Japanese market was able to catch up quickly thanks to higher quality standards and productivity rates. At the beginning of the 1970s, Toyota was particularly able to meet the demand for smaller, fuel-efficient cars, thus taking a pioneering position in price, equipment and safety.
