smart: Open your mind.

The idea for the unusual smart vehicles came from the Swiss Nicolas Hayek, founder of the swatch watches. He envisioned a small and inexpensive vehicle that would be grouped below the VW Polo class and also score points, similar to the swatch concept, with versatility through interchangeable bodies. In 1994, Hayek found a suitable car manufacturer for his forward-looking project in Daimler-Benz.

When it later turned out that Daimler-Benz's ideas did not match Hayek's plans for smart, he withdrew from the company. Nevertheless, the name of the brand with its original meaning remained: Swatch Mercedes Art. The brand's first model, the smart fortwo, was introduced in 1998, four years after the company was founded. This was followed by models such as the five-door small car smart forfour and the sporty two-seater smart roadster.
