In 1862, Adam Opel decides to go into business for himself - not, however, with the manufacture of vehicles, but sewing machines. It was not until 1898 that the company began producing cars under the leadership of Opel's wife Sophie. In the years that followed, the brand made a name for itself as "Imperial Court Supplier" as well as with motorbike construction and its 'Doctor's Car', and in 1937 it even became Europe's largest car manufacturer for a time.
